For the Love of Rockhurst and Baseball

Spring is a time for scrutinizing rosters, analyzing workout reports and making predictions for baseball fans everywhere. At Rockhurst, baseball season has officially begun. For Jim Myers '68, it is his love of the game and the university that is shaping his legacy.

When Jim was growing up, baseball was a major part of his life. "I couldn't get enough—I just wanted to keep playing. Baseball pulled me through some pretty tough times," he says.

When Jim had the opportunity to play ball at Rockhurst, he was living the dream and had his sight set on the majors. Unfortunately, a collision during a game freshman year injured Jim's knee and ended his baseball career.

"I was devastated, but I had so much support from the people at Rockhurst; I refocused my energy on my academic path," Jim says.

The two people at Rockhurst who had the largest impact on Jim were Fr. Robert Weiss, S.J., and Fr. Joseph Freeman, S.J. According to Jim, he would not have been accepted to Rockhurst were it not for Fr. Weiss.

"I needed someone to have faith in me and Fr. Weiss did," Jim says. Fr. Freeman was a mentor and role model for Jim, teaching him to see God in all things.

Jim went on to become a very successful psychologist and his love of baseball never waned. That is why he is establishing the James L. Myers Athletic Fund through his estate. The fund will go to supporting the baseball program and Rockhurst athletes.

"When I played ball at Rockhurst, the field was gruesome—rocks, glass and sticks everywhere. Now, the field is pristine and we want to keep it that way," Jim says.

"Jim's gift will not only ensure the facilities stay in great shape and our players have the equipment they need, but it will also greatly enhance our recruitment efforts," Athletic Director and Coach Gary Burns says.

Jim's gift is not just about supporting baseball, it is about giving back to the university that shaped his life.

"I have been blessed more than I deserve and Rockhurst is my most important blessing. I'm giving all I have to Rockhurst because Rockhurst gave all to me," Jim says.

When asked what advice he would give to students today, Jim says, "Just remember everything can change in an instant. Never lose your sense of faith and love the Lord with all your heart and soul."
