Anthony Moran: Rigorous Schedule and Hard Work Lead to Scholarship
Anthony Moran
Anthony Moran knows all about hard work. As a junior majoring in exercise science at Rockhurst University, Anthony has always juggled a rigorous course-load. But the native of Kansas City, Kan., does much more than just study and attend class. With the ultimate goal of a career in chiropractic care, Anthony works a part-time job at a local chiropractic clinic. In addition, he also owns his own business and is heavily involved in several campus groups. He wouldn't have it any other way.
"I work hard to give back and get involved while in school," Anthony says. "I have a lot going on in my life, but I continue to work hard in school and keep my GPA up. It's an indescribable feeling knowing that I have made it this far and that I will soon be graduating."
"I Would Not Be Here" Without Financial Support
With the goal of a Rockhurst University degree within reach, Anthony is excited but also grateful. He is a recipient of the Adolph L. Heine Scholarship, which is awarded annually to Rockhurst University students who are also graduates of Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City, Kan. Adolph believed in the value of higher education and had a passion for helping Rockhurst University students.
Prior to his death, Adolph established a trust that named Rockhurst University as a beneficiary. Thanks to his philanthropy, along with his careful planning, Adolph has left a legacy of generosity that will help deserving students reach their academic objectives for many years to come. In fact, 13 deserving young men and women were selected as Heine Scholars for the 2012-13 academic year.
"I would not be here without financial aid and scholarships," Anthony says. "I had the chance to meet the scholarship trustees last year, so it was really nice to put a face with the name. I will always associate the Heine name with generosity."
Value of Education and Work Ethic Learned at Home
Anthony is the first in his family to attend college and his strong work ethic started at home. Both of his parents work full-time: his dad helps build transmissions on the assembly line of Harley-Davidson and his mom works for the Kansas City, Kan., Housing Authority. His parents are big believers in a strong education and worked hard to ensure Anthony and his brother would be prepared for life's challenges. For Anthony, the demands and rigors of a Rockhurst University education were a perfect fit for his goals and dreams.
Following graduation next year, Anthony plans to enroll in chiropractic college. The goal is to become a doctor of chiropractic and to eventually own his own practice. In the meantime, coursework and on-campus activities such as the Student Organization of Latinos, where Anthony serves as treasurer, helps to fill the schedule. And as one of the many Heine Scholars, gratitude has filled his heart.
"I just want to thank them for their kindness because it has helped keep my dreams alive. And as I narrow in on my goals each day, I know one of the main reasons I am able to do so is because of this scholarship."
